This is a great review! i never considered how revolutionary the portrayal of female sexuality is to this book. your analysis within the context of when the book was written is so interesting and provides such a great perspective
I love this book so much. i read it towards the end of last year digitally then bought a physical copy a few months ago and am planning to reread it soon. the fact that the sapphic vampire story which subverts expectation of female characters is so underappreciated is so sad. I recommend this book whenever i can it! is so good!!!
I agree, it's so sad that this book is often overlooked and shadowed by Dracula and other vampire fiction. Not just because it was written first, but because I think it has so many incredible themes that people miss out on. I hope you enjoy your reread! 🤎
Wonderful review! I wondered how people perceived this book in 1872. It was their first introduction to vampires and the book feels so ominous and mysterious - they must have been terrified! Great book!
Yes, I'd love to know more about that too! We can read Carmilla with over 150 years of vampire literature to refer to, but they would have no prior experience and must have felt terrified like you said 🤎
i’ve been wanting to read carmilla forever and this just completely convinced me to buy it asap! so beautifully written and i can’t wait to come back to it after i read the book!
